You might recall back to March 2014 when we did a Savvy Shoppers feature on baby carriers in which we included the Baby Bjorn carrier and gave it a less than stellar review. We found the standard Baby Bjorn carrier to be hard on our backs, expensive and ill suited to the ergonomic needs of the baby as well. We were excited when we heard that Baby Bjorn had addressed some of these issues and had developed a new and more ergonomic carrier. They call it the Baby Bjorn Carrier We and this is what we think of it!
Features of the Baby Bjorn Carrier We
The Baby Bjorn Carrier We was developed when Baby Bjorn did their research and learned that the needs of modern day parents had changed from when they first developed their first carrier. They learned that parents want to be able to carry their children (not just babies) for longer, and also that they want more options then just a front carrying option.
Especially when carrying a toddler or even a preschooler, it is great to have the option to carry them on your back! Having the ability to back carry your child means they can still see the world as you see it, while having the security of being held closely and contact that they desire.
One big difference between this carrier and the original Baby Bjorn carrier is that this one does not offer the forward facing front carry as one of the possible positions. To me, this is fantastic! In my opinion and experience, a child does not need to face forward on the front of their parent, this is very over stimulating to little ones and by design is not very good for the hips of the baby.
The wider seat allows the baby’s legs and hips to be in a more ideal position regardless of the position of the carrier. While the carrier claims to be easy to put on and take off, I personally found it tricky to use and found that I actually needed to put down my little one to take the carrier off and also to put it on.
The waist straps and shoulder straps are definitely a big improvement and offer more padding and better support and positioning than the earlier models, however I still found it less supportive then other soft structured carriers I have used.
I used the Baby Bjorn Carrier We with A who is 27 pounds and I was uncomfortable after about 10 minutes of carrying him. I then tried out the carrier with a newborn and found it much more comfortable. Baby G was 3 weeks old and around the 10 pound mark when I wore her and she was very comfortable in it. She fell asleep almost immediately and I felt very secure moving around, bending over, etc without feeling like she would fall out.
The Baby Bjorn Carrier We claims to be suitable for babies and children from day one until about the age of 3 years or 33 pounds. As I said, 27 pound A was quite heavy but 10 pound G felt great. In my opinion, this carrier is ideal for children under 15 pounds.
While this new Baby Bjorn Carrier We has comes a long way from the original design of Baby Bjorn carriers, in our opinion, it is still not the best option for a soft structured carrier.
